ALTÁN begins its commercial operation in new locations towards meeting the 50% population coverage milestone through Red Compartida

8 July, 2019

  • Tuxtla Gutiérrez and Villahermosa, together with its conurbation, are the first large population zones in the Southeast of México with Red Compartida’s 4.5G coverage
  • These markets add to the recent launches of Cuernavaca and Veracruz, put into operation at the end of May
  • The four markets jointly reach more than 2.8 million inhabitants with 4.5G connectivity
  • In these four zones, more than 645 thousand inhabitants are covered in localities of less than 10 thousand inhabitants, including 282 towns of “high” and “very high” marginalization
  • With these launches, the national coverage of ALTÁN’s network reaches 45 million people (+40% of the population of Mexico).

CDMX, July 7, 2019.- ALTÁN Redes, the Mexican company deploying and operating Red Compartida, the country’s mobile wholesale broadband network, has started the commercial operation of new markets with 4.5G coverage, on the way to meet the population coverage milestone 3 months before the established date, in order to reach 50% of the inhabitants of the country.

On July 1st, the markets of Villahermosa, Tabasco, and Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, have been launched commercially, which together reach more than 1 million 260 thousand inhabitants, including 350 thousand people in towns of less than 10 thousand inhabitants in both states. This represents 28.2% of the coverage put into operation, which almost doubles the commitment required to ALTÁN for the deployment of the network in rural areas.

These markets add to Cuernavaca, Morelos, and Veracruz, Veracruz, which have been operating since the end of last May. Both combined, cover more than 1.5 million inhabitants.

The four commercial areas together provide 4.5G coverage to more than 2.8 million inhabitants, including 645 thousand located in semi-urban and rural communities of less than 10 thousand inhabitants. This represents 22% of the coverage required to ALTÁN for the deployment of the network in rural areas; 7 points more than the minimum established.

It is also important to point out that in these four states (Tabasco, Chiapas, Veracruz and Morelos) 4.5G Internet coverage has reached 282 towns qualified with “high” and “very high” marginalization, according to the Marginalization Index by Locality published by the Consejo Nacional de Poblacion. Without the arrival of Red Compartida, these localities would still have a deficient or null Internet connectivity to navigate from a fixed device at home or business, or from a mobile phone.

The coverage of new Pueblos Magicos is added to the four announced markets: Aculco de Espinoza and Malinalco, in the Estado de México; Cholula de Rivadavia (Puebla); Tequisquiapan (Querétaro); Mazamitla and Lagos de Moreno (Jalisco); Tzintzuntzan (Michoacán), and Chiapa de Corzo (Chiapas). With these localities, 37 of the 56 Pueblos Magicos have been reached in order to bring the latest mobile generation connectivity to towns with high cultural and tourism value.

A national network with complete commercial operation and high technical performance

These launches lead Red Compartida to provide commercial service to more than 40% of the country’s population: 45 million people, almost 9 million of them in towns of less than 10 thousand inhabitants, which represents a 20% of the current total national coverage.

By October 2019, 50% of the country’s population will be reached: almost 60 million people in 29 markets (11.5 million people in populations of less than 10 thousand inhabitants). With the deployment of a LTE Advance mobile network, 19 thousand populations of less than 10 thousand inhabitants will be reached, as well as main road stretches.

With this deployment, the objectives of coverage of broadband Internet access and promotion of competition in the market established for the Red Compartida by the Government of Mexico, significantly advance.

Tutela, an international mobile data collection and measurement consultancy, is already measuring ALTÁN’s Network performance for end-users, showing download speeds that double those observed in other 4G networks in the market. These data demonstrate the differentiated experience offered by Red Compartida to its clients and their users throughout the whole coverage.
