ALTÁN Redes congratulates its Chairman of the Board Bernardo Sepúlveda Amor on his appointment as Mexico’s Ambassador Emeritus

Mexico City, April 19, 2018. During the enactment of the Reform Decree of the Mexican Foreign Service Act, Bernardo Sepúlveda Amor, Chairman of the Board of ALTÁN Redes, was appointed Ambassador Emeritus of the United Mexican States by President Enrique Peña Nieto and the Secretary of Foreign Relations, Luis Videgaray Caso.

 

On behalf of its shareholders, management and employees, ALTÁN Redes, the Mexican company responsible for the design, deployment and operation of the wholesale broadband network Red Compartida, is proud to congratulate Mr. Bernardo for this distinction, which he rightly earned on the strength of his outstanding work in the field of foreign policy.

 

“Today we honor Ambassador Bernardo Sepúlveda, an exemplary Mexican, who by virtue of his service to the nation in the field of foreign policy has earned the appointment as Ambassador Emeritus of Mexico. As a diplomat and a jurist, Don Bernardo has devoted his entire career to holding the name of Mexico high; and as a professor of international law, he has helped to train several generations of internationalists,” said President Enrique Peña Nieto during the appointment ceremony.

 

Acknowledging Sepulveda Amor’s distinguished career, Ambassador Carlos de Icaza said: “Owing to his commendable leadership at the helm of the Secretariat of Foreign Relations and his career in the academy, he has left an indelible mark on Mexican institutions and has inspired numerous diplomats.”

 

Bernardo Sepúlveda was appointed Chairman of the Board of ALTÁN Redes on September 28th, 2017. He has successfully brought to bear his professional experience to reinforce the implementation of Red Compartida, while consolidating the Company’s commitment to bring connectivity to at least 92.2% of Mexicans.

 

In an official act witnessed by Mexican President Peña Nieto held on March 21st of this year by the Telecommunications Investments Promotion Agency (Promtel), Sepúlveda received the compliance certificate of the first coverage milestone comprising 32.2% of the country’s population or 36.1 million people, 5.8 million of which reside in towns of less than 10,000 inhabitants.

 

In words delivered during the kick-off event, he told attendees: “The Red Compartida will play a central role in providing access to telecommunications, broadband and the internet, which is a right of Mexicans enshrined in the Constitution.”

 

The commitment of Bernardo Sepúlveda to serve Mexico is now a part of ALTÁN Redes, as it seeks to consolidate the 4G-LTE mobile broadband network, which promises to bring coverage and connectivity without distinction to all Mexicans.

 

Under Article 25 of the Mexican Foreign Service Act, the Executive Branch is empowered to grant the title of Ambassador Emeritus to those individuals who have accumulated a body of outstanding achievements in the field of foreign policy.

 

Only five people are allowed to hold the title of Ambassador Emeritus in the country. Holders of the titled are chosen from a list of candidates who are active or retired Ambassadors with at least 25 years in the Foreign Service devoted to high level matters in the field of Foreign Affairs.

About the Red Compartida

Red Compartida is one of Mexico’s most important telecommunications projects in recent years. It is a modern, mobile wholesale broadband network, neutral and of non-discriminatory type, in the 700 MHz band. It will increase the coverage of the most advanced telecommunications services, 4G-LTE to at least 92.2% of the Mexican population. It is implemented through a Public-Private Partnership signed between ALTÁN Redes, the Telecommunications Investment Promoting Body (Promtel) and Telecommunications of Mexico (Telecomm). The project is completely self-financed with private resources from its shareholders, private financing from its suppliers and by the Mexican development banks.
